ArtPrize Artist Matthew Sutherland shares digital images and stories about life, photography + social media.
JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Elisabeth Röhm and Dascha Polanco. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.
Highly recommend this documentary!

In 2004, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design.

URBAN - CITYSCAPES
"My true inspiration has always been the city. It's a driving force that feeds the artist in me daily. I feel at home in the city. As a boy, I constantly adventured through the busy streets, construction sites, downtown buildings, historic homes and abandoned warehouses.
When I'm in the city, I'm drawn to the architecture first. The story within the buildings is where my eye usually travels. When I paint the city, I try to capture the light and color within the buildings, streets and urban elements (cars, people) that illustrate motion and energy. Throughout the development of the cityscape, I illustrate characters and personalities within the figures. In the end, I want the viewers to feel as if they're a part of the painting and feel the motion and energy in that specific moment in time.
MODERN - ABSTRACTS
Aside from my cityscape paintings, I also create numerous series of abstract and nonrepresentational works. In 2002, I began a series of organic and non-organic abstracts. They were developed from elements in the city while diverging from the traditional cityscape. The Metro Series was based on grid/ windows/building/ structure system and evolved into one the my most collected abstract series. There are several large works in the beginning stages now that have all the series integrated into one. Fall 2015 will showcase two new major abstract series that are being developed.
